- Le Quan and Nguyen Dieu Thuy
25 March - 5 April 2004Zee Stone Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by the Vietnamese artists, Le Quan and Nguyen Dieu Thuy. The exhibition features a selection of works in the artists’ contrasting styles: Le Quan’s street scenes of Hanoi in the vibrant colours of seasonal transition; and the subdued figurative works and still lifes of Nguyen Dieu Thuy in white and neutral colours.
Le Quan employs vigorous brushwork and an Impressionist style to depict the play of sunlight and shadow on the charming old streets of Hanoi with their bright trees and lively flower markets. In his latest work, lakeside and countryside scenes also show different facets of the city. Born in Hanoi in 1953, Le Quan graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts College in 1973 and from the Hanoi Fine Arts University in 1982.
Nguyen Dieu Thuy’s paintings encompass a wide repertoire of subject matter: semi-abstract compositions of rice bowls and chopsticks; traditionally dressed young women in reflective poses; small birds; and waterside scenes reflecting life on the river in her native south Vietnam. Nguyen Dieu Thuy was born in Saigon in 1962. After graduating from the Conservatoire de Musique as a violinist, she embarked on her painting career in 1991. Her works combine a subdued palette of white and earth tones with a graphic sense of line.
